Symptoms & Diagnosis
Critical care is required when a patient's vital organ systems are failing or at high risk of failure. This can be due to trauma, severe infection, chronic illness complications, or after major surgery.
When a patient presents with these symptoms, the critical care team quickly assesses the situation using:
- Vital signs monitoring
- Blood tests
- Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis
- Chest X-rays or CT scans
- ECG (Electrocardiogram)
- Ultrasound and echocardiography
- Neurological exams or brain scans
- Urine output monitoring
